Beyond the Buzz: Unveiling the Past and Present of Koukaki

16 March @ 11:00 - 15:00

Free – €40.00
Athens, Koukaki (4+)

Which things constitute the “Greekness” of Greece? Join us in an immersive Travel Coaching workshop in the streets of Koukaki, in search of authenticity beyond the tourist routes.

Koukaki has become a darling of Athens, captivating tourists with its charming streets, authentic atmosphere, and proximity to the Acropolis. While this influx has revitalized the area with trendy shops, cafes, and hotels, it’s also raised questions about rising rents and the changing character of the neighbourhood.
This workshop delves deeper than the tourist façade. We’ll explore Koukaki’s hidden gems – its pedestrian zones, elegant mid-war houses, and the stories etched into its past.

Prepare to discuss:

  • The Rise of the Hipster Haven: We’ll explore the modern transformation of Koukaki, from a quiet residential area to a hub of trendy cafes and avocado toast.
  • Beyond the Hype: Authenticity vs. Transformation: Was Koukaki built by Airbnb, or has it simply evolved? We’ll discuss the impact of tourism on local character and explore the concept of “Greekness” – is it a static identity or can it embrace change?
  • The Coco Mat Enigma: We’ll delve into the story of the Coco Mat hotel, sparking conversation about ambition and its impact on the neighbourhood’s aesthetic.
  • Curating Your Emotions: Imagine a museum dedicated to your emotions! We’ll end with a thought-provoking exercise, prompting you to consider the emotions Koukaki evokes and how they contribute to the neighbourhood’s unique character.

This workshop is perfect for:

  • Travellers seeking a deeper understanding of Athens
  • Anyone interested in urban development and gentrification
  • Those curious about the impact of tourism on local communities
